Gosh this takes me back to high school. Pumpkin soup was one of the first things I learnt to cook in home ec class in high school and continued to cook at home for my parents. Indeed one of the first memories to imbed and that I could cook from memory. It’s such a nostalgic one.

it’s amazing how the simplest of foods can take us back in time and place; it’s one of the most fascinating aspects of this lovely project; hopefully you’ll come across lots more. Cookery the Australian Way was our Home Ec text book - did you have that too? or was it before your time? 🫢

I absolutely had Cookery the Australian Way and have searched high and low for a copy having lost my original. So many recipes from that book I recall and can’t remember how to make.

Home Economics Victoria sell it on their website - over 1 million copies sold! I’m going to buy one, for the nostalgia factor if nothing else! My Home Ec teacher’s name was Mrs Hodgson - do you remember yours? 🧁

I’m dreaming of an apple dumpling recipe I used to make all the time. Maybe I need a 1989 edition lol.

Oh seriously?!?! The one that was a peeled half apple wrapped in something like a soft sweet scone like dough?

good morning! just wanted to let you know I tracked down a copy of Cookery the Australian Way on ebay for about $40 - it’s on it’s way…wished I’d kept my 70’s edition it’s worth several hundred dollars; although it’s a bit disconcerting to see it described as vintage! 😂

Oh you’re a start thank you I’ll check. I was also going to check out the local school bookshop for a used copy being ‘that’ time of year.

oh good idea - Tim from Books for Cooks tells me people search for a specific edition/year (maybe they’re looking for the ones they actually cooked from) let me know if you find one and let the cook off begin! 🧁
